I don't understand this. And I find that SO FRUSTRATING.

It's a two-toned note(s) that they're playing. One is an octave higher than the other. When you finish listening to the recording the first time, you're listening for the octave above and not the octave below. So, it sounds like it's continuing from the last thing that you heard, but really if you listen to the lower note, you should be able to tell that it's the same thing that you heard the very first time you played it.
