I Love the Lake

I can't possibly tell you with words how much I'm enjoying being back at the lake, so I'm not even going to try, but I would like to tell you about one of the coolest things I've ever seen (or heard) in my life.

On Saturday, Jordan and Kirk and I went up into the National Park, and we walked the Waskesieu River and Boundary Bog trails. On our way back, we pulled over to go down and have a look at the lake. It was a warm day, and the sun was sparkling off the ice, which had just started breaking up that morning. Aside from the occasional bird, the only thing we could hear was the sound that the ice made as the wind and the sun imposed their respective wills upon the lake. We could actually hear the ice melting, which surprised me, but I guess when that much ice melts, it's pretty noisy.

While the sun played the base-line, the wind swept across the lake, causing an uncountable number of tiny collisions between thousands of little icebergs. I'd say that it was kind of like the whole lake was covered with wind-chimes while someone smashed expensive crystal just inside of earshot, but that doesn't even come close. I can't really describe the sound, because I've never heard anything like it, and I'm reasonably sure that I never will again, but it was pretty friggin' awesome. If there is a heaven, then heaven's alarm clocks wake you up with the song that the lake played on Saturday.

I remember a canoe trip on Amisk Lake in late May where the ice hadn't come off the south half of the lake yet. We canoed as far as we could into the candling ice, until we were surrounded by the sun, that sound of cracking chimes, and the cool breeze.

Thanks for reminding me of that. It was awesome, in the full and literal sense of the word.

Happy Birthday Tomas! Yes, I know this birthday wish is a day late, but I am sending it anyways.

I hope that you had a fantastic party at the lake. Are you home for the summer? We'll have to touch base sometime.
